About the Author

Thanks for visiting my website.

A little about me…

You’ll notice right away that there are no titles or initials after my name.  I’m just a person, like you (whether you have a title or not).  If you prefer reading philosophical materials from Ph.D.’s only, I suggest you check my recommended reading.

One of the points I try to make in the book is that we, as a culture, tend to rely too heavily on ‘expert’ opinions.  An expert is a person who has a significant amount of education and/or experience relating to a field of knowledge.  But experts are people, too.  They rely heavily on the presuppositions that they hold about life and on the opinions of their teachers and other ‘experts,’ who in turn have their own biases and world views.  Anyone can accumulate information about a subject, but it often does nothing to steer a person toward truth —and sometimes has the opposite effect.  As a society, we need to return to a healthy state of skepticism and be certain that we are trusting information-providers that we have reason beyond their title to trust.  There is more about this in the book.

The truth is, I do carry a title —airline captain— not that it helps my credibility as an author.  To support my family, I fly worldwide for a private airline firm that sells shares of very expensive jet airplanes to very wealthy individuals and corporations.  It’s a rewarding job, but if I could make a living writing, I would.  That’s because there is so much to be said and writing can reach such a wide audience.  And I believe that a great number of people are lost (I know, that word sounds so ‘churchy’).  By ‘lost,’ I mean wandering through life unsure and with no clarity of understanding or purpose.  Many have given up searching for satisfying truth about their existence on this planet and have just gotten up day after day, trying to enjoy their life in the best way they can, not knowing, or believing they can know, what it’s really all about.

What qualifications do I have to present answers to a lost and uncertain world?  The same qualifications as any person.  I’ve lived, tried, misunderstood, pondered, read, listened, and experienced life for more than sixty years.  Like you, I’ve looked at life from all angles and when I’ve had questions I’ve studied and considered them, sometimes for many years, and eventually gotten to the point of understanding the things that I want to share with you in this book.  “Because I Think, I Believe” is, as the cover says, a ‘personal manifesto’ —a declaration of what I believe to be true at the most basic level of being.  I hope you’ll read the book and that, whether you enjoy it or not, you’ll let me know about it.
